Choosing a career is a daunting choice, but if you are good with math, and have a passion for business, accounting is a rewarding career. An accounting diploma or degree can open different career options for you. Many people consider accounting to be the primary language of business, because most business objectives are communicated as numbers. An accounting degree helps the student focus on the financial records of companies, individuals, corporations, and organizations. You don’t need to understand advanced calculus to succeed as an accountant or bookkeeper. Accounting requires addition and subtraction, and some multiplication and division, but nothing that is out of reach. By pursuing an accounting diploma or degree, you will be a qualified candidate for in-demand bookkeeping jobs. MTI College at Sacramento offers an A.A. in Business Administration with Concentration in Accounting and an Accounting Technician diploma program to help you start your career. Traits of an Accounting ProfessionalWorking as a bookkeeping clerk, accountant, or accounting technician requires a few characteristics. If you are good with numbers, that mathematical aptitude will help you balance ledgers, fill out financial documents, and analyze spreadsheets. Another hallmark characteristic is organization. Many accounting professionals say that accounting is more about keeping things organized than hardcore math. If you obsess over putting things in order, accounting may be a great choice for you. The easiest way to get started in a bookkeeping career is as an accounting technician. What Does an Accounting Technician Do?Accounting technicians, called bookkeeping clerks, accounting clerks, and auditing clerks at some companies and organizations, produce a wide variety of financial documents. Depending on their specific position and the size of the organizations they work in, they can record financial transactions, update financial statements, and check records for accuracy. No matter the title, accounting technicians provide vital services to the financial health of their companies. They also enjoy excellent compensation and a good job outlook throughout the country. Responsibilities of an Accounting ClerkThe specific responsibilities of an accounting clerk can vary a bit from position to position, depending on the type, size, and complexity of the business. Their general responsibilities are relatively universal, including using booking software, online spreadsheets, and databases, posting financial transactions using computer software, receiving and recording monies in various forms, such as checks, cash, and vouchers. Other responsibilities may include inputting costs and income into spreadsheets and databases using software applications, producing reports, balance sheets, and financial statements, auditing accounts, figures, postings, and reports, and reconciling discrepancies in accounts, reports, and postings. Qualifications for Becoming an Accounting TechnicianThe qualifications required to gain a position as an account technician can also vary somewhat from company to company, or organization to organization. Some employers are willing to hire account technicians with little to no formalized training and education, providing them with the tools to learn their position on the job, while others may require post-secondary education or experience. However, the general qualifications required are somewhat similar and include basic computer skills; comfort using spreadsheets, databases, and bookkeeping software; a detail-oriented personality; some general math skills; and unquestionable integrity. Accounting technicians have important responsibilities that require efficiency, accuracy, and above all, integrity to effectively execute. What is the Typical Career Path for an Aspiring Accountants?Though most full-fledged accountants begin their career as an accounting technician or bookkeeping clerk, many continue the path to become an accountant or CPA. Bookkeepers usually have a diploma or Associate’s degree, while accountants typically have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. What’s the difference? Accountants can create financial statements, prepare tax documents, and conduct ledger audits for companies. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are distinct from accountants. To become a CPA, you must pass a special exam and take extra college credits. This is the highest title you can hold in general accounting, as CPAs are authorized to legally represent taxpayers to the IRS, as well as prepare tax documents. Most accountants focus on a specific area of work, such as Forensic Accounting, Public Accounting, Government Accounting, and Internal or External Auditors. How Long Does It Take to Get an Accounting Degree or Diploma?Associate’s accounting degrees or diploma programs usually take ½ year to 2 years to complete, Bachelor’s about four, Master’s about six years, and PhDs about eight years. What Types of Jobs Can You Get With an Accounting Diploma or Degree? With an accounting diploma or degree, you can pursue a career as a bookkeeper, accounting technician, or full-fledged accountant. But there are other career paths where an accounting diploma can be useful, including:
Many of these jobs require additional skills beyond math, accounting, and organization. Most related jobs have you working alongside or with other people, so interpersonal skills are important. Compensation for Accounting Clerks and AccountantsAccounting technicians typically enjoy a good standard of living. The 2019 median salary for accounting clerks was $41,230 per year, with additional employer-paid benefits. (Median pay in 2019 for accountants and CPAs was $71,550.) The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that information technology jobs will grow by 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, which is much faster than average. Some of the foundational certifications that hiring managers look for are the CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications. The MTI College A.A.S. AWS Cloud Administration program prepares you for all three of these certification exams. Even with the booming job market, it pays to have these certifications on your resume. Whether you are seeking a career in networking or telecommunications, or as a network support specialist, network administrator and help desk technician, the Network+ certification is valuable. This certification shows you have expertise that translates to a wide variety of IT professions. About the CompTIA Network+ CertificationThe CompTIA Network+ Certification is a mid-level certification for network technicians. This certification tests the competency of a network technician in various tasks, like configuring and supporting TCP/IP clients in a network, cabling and routing, hardware setup, and network security. This certification is a vendor neutral certification that also tests for competency in configuration, installation, support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of basic computer networks. CompTIA, otherwise known as the Computing Technology Industry Association is the certifying body. They have certified over two million IT professionals since the 1990s. The Network+ certification is one of CompTIA’s foundational certificates. CompTIA certifications are updated about every three years, and the old versions are retired. The current Network+ exam, N10-007, was launched in March 2018 and will be effective for three years. This latest version added new topics such as security and network resiliency. The certification covers five areas:
The Network+ examination is 90 questions, and applicants have 90 minutes to answer all questions. The Network+ exam contains situational, traditional, and identification types of questions. This means that what you learn studying for the Network+ exam can be applied to a wide array of IT products and solutions. Similar certifications to the Network+ are:
CCNA requires at least one to three years of field experience to take the exam. Like the Network+ certification, CCNA is based on the responsibilities of a network-related job. However, CCNA is specific to Cisco products while Network+ is applicable across all vendor products and solutions. MTA and CCENT are not based on the job role, and more akin to introductions to the vendor’s networking products and offerings. Potential Career PathsThe Network+ certification demonstrates a foundational understanding of enterprise networking technologies. This makes it a great certification for those in the beginning of their career, or well into their IT career. Here are some careers where a Network+ certification can be beneficial:

The post Career Opportunities for a Business Administrator appeared first on MTI College. from https://mticollege.edu/blog/business/business-administration/career-opportunities-business-administrator/ March 2, 2020 – MTI College is closely monitoring the emerging public health issue regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The College is staying current with information provided by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health and the Sacramento County Department of Health Services. Our goal is to provide relevant communication on this matter as necessary, while following the precautions outlined by these health departments. Furthermore, the College is approaching the situation in phases. Currently, there are no known cases of infection or exposure to the virus within the campus community. As such, we are currently in a phase of preparation in the event of exposure to our community, and prevention to reduce that risk of exposure. Face Masks At this point in time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are not recommending that uninfected individuals wear face masks to limit exposure to disease. However, out of an abundance of caution, the College has increased its supply of masks and will have them available to all students, faculty, and staff upon request. Please see your department chair to obtain a mask. The global availability of masks is low, so please limit your request to one mask at this time. Disinfection The campus is regularly cleaned by the janitorial staff. In addition to this cleaning, members of the Technical Services and Healthcare departments are routinely disinfecting common areas with sterilizing wipes that are rated for use against COVID-19. Individual Precautions It is important that all members of our community are making a conscious effort to follow these guidelines from the CDC to help prevent the spread of disease:
Staying Home The most important means of preventing the spread of disease is to STAY HOME if you are feeling ill. No matter how insignificant you feel your symptoms are, it is imperative that you stay home and seek medical care until you have been cleared to return to school by a physician. If you do not have a primary care provider, there are local facilities that offer low or no cost primary care and behavioral health services to individuals that qualify. Some of these facilities are listed below.
Sacramento, CA 95820
Placerville, CA 95667
We understand the concerns associated with missing work or class time, but, above all else, preventing the spread of infection must be our top priority. With that in mind, MTI College is committed to providing opportunities to those who miss class time due to illness with the resources and information necessary to stay current in their studies. Since the appropriate remedies will vary depending on the courses an individual student is enrolled in, students missing class should contact the Director of Student Services, Rosamaria Cerezo, to coordinate a plan to maintain their class progress during their absence. Paul Mitchell the School students should contact the Future Professional Advisor, Nikki Montgomery. Their contact information is below.
We will continue to closely monitor the health of all community members and follow the guidelines provided by federal, state, and local authorities. As mentioned above, we are approaching this incident in phases and a campus closure is not being considered at this time. While other private or public colleges may be considering this option, each college’s circumstances are unique and given what is known at this time, we strongly believe suspending classes at MTI would be premature and not in the best interest of those we serve. As the situation develops and new guidance becomes available from state and federal agencies, we will adjust our tactics accordingly and communicate them to the campus community. For more information regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), please see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. For more information on health and safety at MTI College, please see the Safety on Campus Manual. For further questions, please contact your program director or supervisor.
